Prime TV (Australia) select mediaproxy's ENIGMA logging solution for their Broadcast Centralisation Project

Gerry Smith: General Manager - Engineering & Operations Prime Television

The Project

In early 2001 Prime Television (Prime) initiated a project to centralise our 17 commercial markets into one purpose built Digital Broadcast Centre in Canberra. This centralised facility originates the main signals for all the markets, additional local content is also inserted in each market by remote controlled playout servers.

The History

Prime has a regulatory requirement to record and hold all our "off air" transmissions for 45 days. Like most global broadcasters Prime had been using cumbersome VHS videotape as the medium for this compliance recording of all our markets. With the establishment of our centralised facility, a VHS recording solution was operationally impractical and expensive.

An additional requirement for Prime was the need to provide the operators in Canberra with a real-time "off air" confidence stream, that enabled these operators to view the actual "off air" transmissions of all the remote markets at the Digital Broadcast Centre in Canberra.

The Solution

At the time, there was no single product that met Prime's requirements. We briefed mediaproxy with our needs.

mediaproxy's ENIGMA logging solution with its associated client software was developed and tailored to meet our specific requirements of transmission logging and confidence monitoring. Mediaproxy also included a range of in built alarms which alerts and e-mails select Prime TV staff to any audio and visual faults in real time

The Benefit

mediaproxy's ENIGMA solution has proven to be a functional and cost-effective solution. High maintenance VHS recorders and other associated equipment are no longer needed. All 17 markets are now recorded "off-air" for compliance, stored for the required 45 days as well as streamed in real time to the Digital Broadcast Centre.

Today, Prime's presentation, master control and senior management staff can monitor the transmissions for all the 17 markets concurrently. When necessary, we can easily and efficiently revisit a media stream by a specific date and time. This means we can access the actual "off air" content of any market within the last 45 days to review - and/or transfer to CD-ROM or videotape, any material that may be questioned by regulatory authorities or advertisers. What was previously a time consuming task now takes seconds to complete!
